     No matter what world language you are studying you are developing global awareness. In order to understand and address global issues, it is important to understand the perspectives on the world that speakers of other languages bring to the table. By learning other languages, students develop respect and openness to those whose culture, religion, and views on the world may be different. Language students are able to interact with students from the target language in order to discuss issues and reach solutions.

     This is what prepares them to use their language learning as a 21st Century Skill.
      No longer do we focus primarily on the structure of the language. At every stage we want you to use the language. The new North Carolina Essential Standards for World Languages stress language proficiency in the following;
Communication
Collaboration
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
Creativity and Innovation
Information Literacy
Media Literacy
Flexibility and Adaptability
Initiative and Self-Direction
Social and Cross-Cultural Skills
Productivity and Accountability
Leadership and Responsibility
